1. John Kingston. Lived at Clodagh, Drimoleague, at Kealanine, Caheragh and at Knockeenbwee, Drimoleague. According to the Drimoleague Parish Vestry Book, John, father of Paul John, was still alive in 1859, although old and hard of hearing. A family headstone transcript gives his full name as “John Roberts Kingston”, the date of his death as 16 Dec 1872, and his (extrapolated) birthdate as about 1784. Buried in the old churchyard, Drimoleague. Married Ellen (Nelly) Mahoney. [Ellen was born about 1793. Died 2 Jan 1869. Lived at Clodagh, Kealanine, Knockeenbwee and at Cahernacrin, Bantry] …comments with the headstone transcripts imply that Paul John Kingston [1a, below] was a brother of Daniel (Big Dan) Kingston of Kealanine [1e, below], and that their families were cousins to the family of Samuel Kingston of Kealanine. Samuel was presumably old John’s brother. Other evidence and traditions support this and suggest that William Kingston of Clodagh (m. Jane Townsend) was another brother. It is tempting to identify possible parents in “Paul Kingston to Elizabeth Roberts”, a 1775 entry in the Index of Marriage Licence Bonds (Diocese of Cork & Ross); all three presumed brothers named their first (known) son “Paul” and daughter, “Elizabeth”, and old John was referred to as “Roberts”. In 1823, one of the sponsors at his son, Dan’s, baptism was named “Betty Roberts”.

All three were born in Ireland; the eldest two children of the younger two men were named, respectively, Thomas & Rebecca and Thomas & Frances. On the other side of Thomas Seniors house was the house of Richard & Rebecca Forbes, both also born in Ireland. No parents are identified in the marriage record of a “Richard Forbes and Rebecca Kingston” in the Drimoleague Church of Ireland Register but both their residences are given as Clodagh and the names and order of birth of their first three children in the 1851 census, allowing for the exception of a missing Mary, are the same as those recorded to this couple in the Baptismal Register. The death records of William and Helen Forbes confirm that their mothers maiden name was “Kingston”. A Canadian record of the relationships between this family’s members, dated 15 Oct 1900, states that Rebecca Kingston (married Forbes), John Kingston, Thomas Kingston (married Roycroft) and Paul Kingston (married Hurley) were half siblings of Margaret Kingston (married Knowles), Richard Kingston (married Knowles), Francis Kingston (married Connell) and William Kingston (married Johnston).
